A Foreign Service Officer is a representative of the United States of America in foreign lands who serves as a promoter for the U.S. in different parts of the world. The FSO has five categories, namely Consular Officers, Economic Officers, Management Officers, Political Officers and Public Diplomacy Officers. Foreign Service officers are also called Diplomats; working at over 265 locations around the world. The FSOs help to build better relationships between the United States and other countries.

The job of a Foreign Service officer is not a simple daily routine job. The FSOs have lots of responsibilities to carry out in different situations, some of which are listed below:

  • Observing the host country from a first person perspective, writing the considered outlook of that country and submitting the observations for examination and consideration by officials who make important decisions regarding bilateral and international relations
A bachelor's degree from the law school, business school, in political science programs or international relations is the first step for aspirants to the Foreign Services. A post-graduate degree is further required for a decent posting. The candidates need to take a rigorous examination consisting of several papers and aptitude tests, after which the successful persons are called to the oral examination. The successful candidates with the highest marks are then selected for the highly prestigious Foreign Services.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to speak more than two languages
  • Thorough knowledge of history, geography, governments, politics, world culture, current topics and other relevant subjects
  • Ability of writing with clear picture of the situations

  • Capability of controlling critical situations, drawing on personal experience and also by consulting the U.S. Departments
  • Readiness to fly from one nation to another and work under different departments
