Amicone blames the layoffs on sharply declining revenue and higher-than-expected costs during the fiscal first quarter. The city currently employs about 3,100 people, including part time personnel.
"The economy of this country, the economy of this state, [and] frankly the economy of the world [has] dramatically changed over the past six months - and for the worse - and the impacts of that are felt at every level including in the city of Yonkers," the mayor said.
The city will freeze hirings; eliminate police and fire academy classes planned for 2009; cut fees to consultants by 75%; and cut special projects and subsidies to community-based organizations by 40%.
