In the face of the global credit crisis, Britain is taking positive steps – by placing four extra ravens in the Tower of London.

 

The seventeenth-century King Charles II decreed there must be at least six ravens living in the tower, otherwise a disaster would strike the nation and the Royal Family.

 

Until now, keepers of the Tower have kept just one spare bird in residence. But with the United Kingdom facing a credit crunch meltdown, it has been ruled that an extra four must now be acquired, according to The Sun.

 

Two six-month-old birds, Gundolf and Hugine, have just arrived and are about to complete their four-week quarantine period. Another two will be delivered next week.

 

Raven Master Derrick Coyle said: “I believe in the curse. It was said that if the number ever fell below six, the Tower would fall and great harm would befall the nation. We certainly feel more secure now.”

 

Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic monument in central London on the north bank of the River Thames. The tower's primary function was as a fortress, a royal palace, and a prison for high status and royal prisoners. Since 1303 AD it has been the home of the Crown Jewels.
