Oakland, California, city employee unions are opposing a proposal to reduce the city’s budget deficit by cutting jobs.
Dellums is proposing that the Bay Area city of 401,000 eliminate jobs and make other cuts to try to reduce its $42 million-dollar budget gap.
The mayor is also considering raising parking fees and parking citations, closing some city parks, reducing youth recreation center hours, and closing city hall on Fridays.
Union officials want to bring in a consultant to look at the city’s books and come up with an alternate plan.
The Oakland City Council is set to discuss the budget proposal again on October 10.
