The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL)
released a report claiming that the jobless rate in the metro Atlanta area jumped nearly two percentage points when comparing its August 2007 numbers with August 2008.
Last month the region had an unemployment rate of 6.3%. In August 2007 its jobless rate was 4.4%.
The change in the rate is consistent with
trends throughout the state and nation. Georgia’s unemployment rate of 6.3% is its highest in 15 years. For the seventh straight month, the state has remained above the national jobless rate. Specifically in August, Georgia’s rate was 0.2 percentage points above the national rate of 6.1%.
In metro Atlanta, the number of jobs in August dropped 20,100 over the year. During that same period, the number of payroll jobs in the state fell by 37,700.
The Georgia Department of Labor is encouraging job-seekers to stay positive and to maximize their use of the department’s services.
