The Illinois Senate passed legislation that is aimed at steering away from the state’s “pay for play” politics. Previously, any political donation had been legal in the state just as long as it was reported. Following a 55-0 vote on Monday, people with state contracts of $50,000 or more are prohibited from contributing to politicians or officeholders’ opponents.
Earlier in the legislative process, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich used his veto power and claimed to rewrite and improve the bill with additional ethics reform.
Many criticize Blagojevich for vetoing a bill that passed both houses of the General Assembly without a single “no” vote. Blagojevich himself is in the middle of federal investigations into allegations of trading
jobs and contracts for contributions. The governor’s office claims that they are the ones actually bringing real ethics reform.
Lawmakers claim that the legislation is a win for the residents of Illinois and a small, but crucial, step towards helping Illinois clean up its reputation.
