The Big Apple is marrying
digital media with its 911 emergency service. America’s largest city will now accept digital photos and videos from persons reporting crimes or quality-of-life complaints to the NYPD. Mayor Michael Bloomberg also announced last month that the police will accept anonymous tips through text messages.
Citizens who call 911 emergency or 311 non-emergency numbers from the five boroughs can now offer operators images related to their complaints.
Call center operators will provide the caller’s telephone number to detectives, who will then call the victim or witness and provide instructions on how to send the photo or video.
Bloomberg said operators would accept up to three images to document complaints about potholes, traffic signs, dirty vacant lots, streets and sidewalks, parking meters, bus stops, parking lots, parks, and public pay phones. John Feinblatt, Bloomberg’s criminal justice coordinator, believes the system will allow residents to “be the city’s eyes and ears like never before.”
