Minnesota’s city of Duluth has reached a $6.5 million deficit for the 2008 fiscal year. Consequently, Mayor Don Ness says he will have to eliminate city jobs.
Ness has estimated that he will have to lay off 217 employees. The first 158 employees he plans to let go are temporary workers, then he plans to cut 12 seasonal jobs and 47 full-time employees. It is expected that these massive layoffs will fill the $828,000 gap in Duluth’s budget.
Unfortunately, many of Duluth’s employees will be receiving termination notices by the end of this week.
