Pasadena, CA - The federal government has decided to give $26 billion to local and state governments, but even that is expected to be insufficient to save 500,000 to 600,000 jobs.

These jobs are expected to be slashed over the next 12 months. Experts say at least 30,000 jobs every month will have to be cut by state and local agencies. The job losses also include the ones at the private businesses that do work with and for government departments. The report came from the Center on Budget and Priority Policies, a Washington DC based think tank.

The Labor Department's July job report shows that state and local governments downsized by 48,000 workers that month, bringing the total to 169,000 job cuts since January. The figure excludes private sector jobs linked to government spending. In spite of the federal aid, the states still have a 62.3 billion budget deficit for 2011 fiscal year.

GovernmentCrossing, a job aggregator site, has been able to list almost 18,000 jobs across the state and local government agencies, with 12,000 vacancies being posted just this month. Most of the jobs are in the healthcare sector, especially the Veterans Department, needing advanced skills such as medical technologist, registered nurse, information technology specialist. GovernmentCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes says ''This isn't surprising, people still have to be taken care of and the Veterans Department is one of the biggest employers of healthcare professionals in the country.''
