The VA Medical Center of Salem, Virginia is located adjacent to Roanoke, both of which are nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. Responsibilities

Assist the radiologists in fluoroscopic exams; Prepares and administers contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal exams of the GI tract. Establishes IV access and administers IV contrast;

Observes patient for signs and symptoms of adverse contrast reaction and initiates the appropriate response for varying levels of severity;

Prepares the contrast materials for cystogram, fistulogram, and arthography;

Responsible to the radiologist and the supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs;

Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to the patient, staff and self. Aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed;

Performs processing of digital images using the CR system. Performs quality control of the images, assessing for proper exposure, positioning and annotation;

Applies CR post processing techniques such as window leveling, edge enhancement, brightness and annotation corrections as necessary before routing images, workstation (RAD VISTA) and/or archiving in PACS, to provide adequate and properly processed images;

Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic images to the surgeons and the professional staff on patients that are unable to be examined in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures;

Utilizes appropriate CPT codes for exams performed and performs timely and accurate case editing for each exam ;

Works with scheduling clerks when patient needs rescheduled;

Supports, identifies and and/or initiates performance improvement plans that utilize the facility model for quality improvement ;

Responsible for cleanliness and stocking of adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas;

Pursues continuing education activities to stay current in techniques and maintain competency;

Incumbent will be on rotation to fill vacation relief or unscheduled technologist shortage for after hours and weekends. They will also be on rotation for Holidays; and All other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 4:00PM-Midnight, Saturday & Sunday (Every other weekend)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.

Preferred Experience: Experience working with C-arms in OR setting and experience performing portable X-ray exams.

Grade Determinations: *GS-8 DRT (Full Performance Level)

Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

-Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines;

-Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed;

-Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results;

-Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed;

-Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers; and

-Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest
