The VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System is currently recruiting for 3 Full Time Registered Nurses for our Acute Medical Unit (E-2).

This RN position provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process in an Acute Medical Unit. The E-2 RN independently functions, responds to all rapid response calls, and is a member of the Code Blue team.

Responsibilities

The VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System provides care utilizing a patient centered care approach.

The RN provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process in an intermediate medical-surgical unit. Completes timely documentation of patient's condition utilizing the standards of nursing practice. Displays critical thinking skills from initial assessments of patient's condition, re-assessments, response to treatments and other clinical findings. Assesses patient's learning needs, develops and implements a plan to meet needs, and instructs patients and families in self-care and treatment measures. Delivers and documents patient education in accordance with nursing plan of care. Incumbent promotes continuity of care and discharge planning utilizing an individualized, interdisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with the patient, family and health care team. Administers prescribed therapies using appropriate clinical judgment. Accurately documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and care provided. Incumbent also interprets arrhythmias. Administers medication and treatments in accordance with established procedures/policy. Knowledgeable in caring for TBI and SCI population which includes autonomic dysreflexia, bowel care, prevention of pressure ulcers, use of assistive lifting devices etc. Proficient in isolation technique and infection control practices which include prevention of MRSA transmission. Incumbent will participate in promotion of health such as the flu and pneumonia vaccinations. Incumbent will be familiar with performance measures and act as a leader utilizing the VA's I Care and the HDPM core competencies through Patient Centered Care delivery.

Position may entail other duties as assigned and travel between the Castle Point and Montrose campuses and CBOC's to meet the needs of the staff and program needs.

Work Schedule: Evening/Night Shifts (with rotation as needed; tour of duty will be discussed during the interview process)

Current, full, active and unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in a State or territory of the United States.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN

) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE

). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.

Preferred Experience: BSN; telemetry certification strongly preferred with a minimum of two years med/surg experience desired. Knowledge of EKG monitoring also preferred.

ACLS and AHA BLS Certifications are required.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), pulling, pushing, repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking, depth perception , hearing (aide permitted); near/far vision correctable to meet Driver's License requirements. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

Work requires extensive walking, standing, stretching and bending in caring for patients.

Grade Determinations: Applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board and utilized in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy. The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
