About the Position:

This position is located at the Dalecarlia Water Treatment Plant, 5900 MacArthur Boulevard NW, Washington, DC. This position is under the supervision of the Washington Aqueduct. The Aqueduct, while part of the US Army Corps of Engineers, is a large scale, vital public utility, wholly financed through the sale of potable water. The job provides the opportunity to work at one of the largest water utilities in the nation, serving the public and producing a product which impacts the lives of all metropolitan area citizens and businesses on a daily basis. To be successful in this position, you will need to commit yourself to the Aqueduct's mission of providing safe, reliable and cost effective water. Who May Apply:

Install and maintain industrial and domestic water lines, high-pressure piping systems, high temperature systems, and gas and chemical piping and equipment.

Troubleshoot and repair large and small diameter water lines, high temperature systems, steam lines, boilers, hydraulic systems, systems under vacuum, radiators, and pumps of various types.

Perform plumbing work and preventative maintenance to support the facility.

Place and connect air, natural gas, water and sewage fixtures above ground in water treatment facilities and underground.

Interpret blueprints for placement of piping systems and consideration of pressure, expansion, flow, etc.

Operate hand and power tools and equipment to accomplish common trade tasks.

Travel Required

Occasional travel - 5% Business Travel is required for this position.

Two year trial/probationary period may be required.

Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.

Direct Deposit of Pay is Required.

The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health & ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.

In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as Key and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively. The incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.

This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

The incumbent must obtain and maintain certification to work in confined spaces.

This position requires the certification to wear a variety of respirator equipment including tight-fitting face pieces for use in Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) atmospheres.

This position requires work with potential for exposure to highly toxic chemicals, including emergency response in Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) atmosphere under physically demanding conditions.

This position requires Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification.

This position requires emergency and scheduled overtime.

This position requires up to 5% Business Travel.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Pipefitter without more than normal supervision. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Trouble shooting

Employee makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers. As part of the emergency response team, the employee may be required to don and work in Level A personal protective equipment to work in an Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) atmosphere under physically demanding conditions.

Employee performs work both indoors and outdoors under varying conditions of weather, noise and cleanliness. The work includes long periods of activity in confined spaces and water up to two feet for extended periods of time. The employee is given training regarding operating in confined spaces and may be required to be a confined space monitor. There is frequent exposure to uncomfortable heat conditions, strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns or infections. Employee is sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad odors are present. The employee may be required to work on ladders and scaffolds at elevated heights.

Employee uses and maintains prescribed safety/protective clothing and equipment such as the following: hard hat, safety glasses, shoes, belts, face shields, respirators with tight-fitting face pieces, self contained breathing apparatus, hearing protection, gloves, coveralls and chemical resistant clothing, and foul weather gear.
