This position is located in Washington Headquarters Services, Facilities Services Directorate, Federal Facilities Division, Alterations Work Group (AWG). This position involves the responsibility for repairing and/or fabricating high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry, desks, tables, wall boards, furniture, and other various wooden items. The work involves shaping and contouring surfaces, precise, intricate joining and decorating techniques. Incumbent must be skilled in the use of a full range of woodworking tools, machines, techniques, and must possess extensive knowledge of a wide range of wood and wood substitutes including ultimate appearance, durability, strength, and matching characteristics.

As a WOOD CRAFTER, WG-4605-10, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

Repair wood items such as furniture, many types of doors, window frames, paneling, base boards, and various moldings.

Use of full range of woodworking tools, machines, and techniques.

Plan and lay out work from sketches and blueprints, and make templates and patterns.

Use various tools to cut, turn, shape join, bond, fit, assemble and decorate wooden materials and parts.

Shape and contour surfaces using precise, intricate joining and decorating techniques.

Qualifications

Your background must demonstrate a full range of various trades and crafts used to operate, repair and maintain buildings and building support systems; knowledge of the refrigeration cycle of a variety of commercial and industrial systems; Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical and structural drawings and blueprints; Ability to disassemble, repair, and rebuild component parts of industrial equipment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Wood Crafter without more than normal supervision. Repairing and/or fabricating high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry, desks, tables, wall boards, furniture, and other wooden items while working under close supervision while completing common or complex tasks related to Wood Crafters.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements: Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)

Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: The work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. Incumbent works in cramped areas, on temporary platforms and in tiring positions for prolonged periods. The work requires lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds. The incumbent will be required to take an annual physical to include asbestos testing.

WORKING CONDITIONS: There is danger of cuts and bruises, eye and hand injuries, from using hand and powered tools. Incumbent is subject to injuries due to falling from ladders and scaffoldings. Work is usually performed indoors where adequate lighting, heat and ventilation are provided and occasionally outdoors where is some exposure to extreme hot or cold. May also be required to work in areas of a building where ventilating, heating, molding equipment has been shut down for maintenance or other reasons.

Work is done inside buildings, shop areas that are well lighted, heating, and ventilated. Occasionally there is exposure to injury of hands and arms in the use of powered shop machinery as well as when sharpening and adjusting these machines.
