The Rock Springs Field Office manages over 3.6 million acres of public land surface and 3.5 million acres of public subsurface minerals in the southwestern part of Wyoming. The Field Office administers a variety of programs including mineral exploration and development, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, wild horses,livestock grazing, and historic trails. Responsibilities

At the full performance level of GS-11 - the duties of these positions are to ensure federal compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and implementing regulations as well as compliance with various executive orders pertaining to the management of cultural resources and tribal consultation on the National System of Public Lands. Design and implements cultural resource inventory strategies and sampling. Intensively inventory resource development projects. Provide educational information to the public, develop opportunities for partnerships, meet legal requirements with various officials and governments. Evaluate sites for eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic places. Ensure that cultural resource management and services meet multiple resource planning and project requirements including FLPMA and NEPA. Have a working knowledge of ArcGIS and GPS systems that includes manipulating data, creating maps, running viewshed models. Describe, format and synthesize data to perform analyses and assist with land use planning as mandated by the Bureau.

At the GS-9 level: The Archaeologist will work under a supervisor who provides basic information about the scope and objectives of the work and is available for consultation. The employee will be expected to carry out the work on regular and routine issues independently but will consult with supervisor for guidance on non-routine or unique issues and problems.

Physical Demands: In order to gather samples and complete inventory requirements, the individual will be required to hike or ride vehicles over rough terrain and perform work requiring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may include lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment. May be exposed to hostile wildlife, severe weather, chemicals and physical hazards.

Occasional travel - Some overnight travel will be required.
