The Durham VA Medical Center is looking for a Utility Systems Repairer Operator who will work as a shift plant operator with shift responsibility for operation, maintenance and repair of the Air Conditioning Plant and Boiler Plant that includes an Energy Management Control System. The Utility Systems Repairer Operator will be responsible for the following duties:
Performing normal repetitive functions of operations, observations, inspections, tests, repairs and preventive maintenance on the Air Conditioning Plant and the Boiler Plant as per standing shift orders and daily operation orders.
Starting or stopping of selected motor driven equipment, controlling key temperatures, pressures, humidity and other mechanical conditions, utilizing the computerized control reheat system.
Operating, monitoring, and maintaining three (3) supplementary reciprocating electric driver chiller units.
Operating three (3) 17,000 pounds per ABCO fire tube high-pressure steam boilers gas and oil-fired.
Observing, inspecting, performing necessary test, measures key temperatures,
pressures, humidity, and resets control points as conditions require.
Making scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, and repairs on all equipment and systems.
Monitoring alarm annunciator panel.
Controlling and operating, thru the Control Center functional components of each of the following: mechanical exhaust systems, auxiliary air conditioning systems for standby/supplemental cooling, heated and chilled water circulating systems.
Monitoring various building alarm systems for electric emergency power generators, fire alarm system, oxygen system, vacuum system, nitrous oxide system, medical compressed air system, sump pumps, and pneumatic tube system.
Making chemical test of water systems for the Boiler Plant and Air Conditioning Plant. Adjust water by adding chemicals or blow down to maintain proper and effective water treatment.
Work schedule: Full-Time, Sunday-Saturday; This position requires rotating shifts (8:00 am-4:30 pm, 4:00 pm-12:00 am, 12:00 am-8:00 am) including weekend and holidays.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must lift and carry heavy equipment needed int the maintenance and repair work of plant equipment. Works in cramped positions at times and must be continuously alert to the many hazardous conditions that prevail in the A/C and Boiler Plants. He/she must work on high scaffolds when replacing or repairing distribution piping or other equipment.
