The Ambulatory Outpatient Surgery Unit has four operating rooms (OR), used by the Medical and Surgical Services. The rooms are used for endoscopic procedures which include, but not limited to, colonoscopy, EGD, flexible sigmoidoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, orthopedic, ophthalmology, podiatry, and general surgical cases. The Registered Nurse is an integral part of the Ambulatory Surgery Unit and he/she works collaboratively with the physician and anesthesia healthcare providers to determine patient needs prior to and while undergoing surgical procedures and assume responsibility for patient care, documentation and evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing actions while ensuring a safe environment of care. He/she regularly performs skills related to post-anesthesia care, IV conscious sedation, scrub and circulatory duties performed in an operating room and provide postoperative discharge education to the Veterans and their families. The nurse specializes in caring for young adult and geriatric Veterans through pre-operative and post-operative procedures, plus caring intra-operatively for Veterans receiving endoscopy procedures. The nurse is accountable for promoting safety, continuity/quality of care and general well-being of the Veteran. Patient assessment and education prior to surgery or an invasive procedure that require some type of sedation or anesthesia is critical to safe patient care; ensuring the patient will have a competent adult to accompany them on the day of the procedure/have a competent adult who can ensure their safety for 24 hours after the procedure; maintaining patient safety and reducing case cancelations on the day of the scheduled procedure. The nurse collaborates with physicians and ancillary services to provide this care. In addition to working in the OR, the Registered Nurse will also be working in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). These duties include, but are not limited to: The comprehensive assessment of the health status of patients that addresses changes to patient conditions, the administration of medication or delegation of medication administration to licensed practical nurses or medication aides in a qualified facility, the procurement and application of new knowledge and technologies, and the evaluation of responses to interventions and the effectiveness of the plan of care.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 40 Hours Bi-Weekly; Day Shift: Hours may vary depending on service need.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN
) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE
). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Minimum of one (1) year Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience.
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to assuming clinical duties. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN). BLS courses are normally offered within 1-5 days of entry on duty. No online certifications will be accepted.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification: The Intensive Care Registered Nurse MUST have ACLS Certification as a condition of employment. If not certified at time of appointment, ACLS Certification MUST be awarded by the end of orientation.
