***The Manchester VA Medical Center is Recruiting for Registered Respiratory Therapist for Medical Specialty Clinics***

Description: The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is responsible for providing respiratory care services to adult and geriatric patients. The RRT works collaboratively with providers, mid-levels, nursing, respiratory therapists, and polysomnography staff.

The RRT evaluates the effectiveness of respiratory care and must be able to operate a variety of equipment including: pulmonary function equipment, oxygen monitors/analyzers, CPAP, BiPAP, VPAP, and other related respiratory therapy equipment.

The RRT will be responsible for providing coverage in a variety of outpatient, ambulatory care settings including, but not limited to PAP Clinic, PAP Set-Ups, Home Oxygen, Pulmonary Function Lab, and Stress Lab.

The RRT has the technical skills to perform the following: Interrogate, inspect PAP Machines functions and reprograms PAP using the modem Software Air View/My Air

Calibrate complex respiratory therapy equipment such as CPAP/BIPAP/ASV units to assure accurate performance.

Trouble Shoot PAP equipment over the Phone.

Inspect masks, tubing and home oxygen equipment.

Identifies and corrects malfunction of respiratory equipment and performs routine minor repair of equipment used in the outpatient setting as needed.

Assesses workload and establishes clinical and administrative priorities for the day.

Functions without direct supervision on many daily activities, but is also expected to communicate regularly with supervisor, physicians, or midlevel providers for clinical support or guidance for complex situations.

Participates with providers in refining treatment plans.

Pulmonary Function Testing.

Home Oxygen Assessments.

Major functions are related to the home non-invasive positive airway pressure (PAP) devices with the application of modem technology as it relates to prescription changes, refills.

Provides the full scope of respiratory therapy procedures and performs set-ups of home oxygen equipment, other complex respiratory equipment (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP, ASV, AVAPS, non-invasive mask ventilation and mask interface fittings).

Provides education for patients, families, and staff.

Provides recommendations for therapy as guided by the therapeutic goals for the patient. Documents all clinical encounters in the electronic medical record.

Schedules and performs regular clinical follow-up for veterans with sleep apnea syndromes or hypoventilation to ensure proper manage and safety.

Schedules and performs reassessments for veterans on home oxygen in accordance to the VA and Joint Commission standards.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Registered Respiratory Therapist: Has a certificate as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either: Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983, or Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.

English Language Proficiency: RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Preferred Experience: None.

Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

GS-07: None beyond the basic requirements.


Candidates must have all of the following: At least 1 year of successful experience related to respiratory therapy at the GS-7 level or equivalent. Qualifying experience at this level is work which includes duties such as: administering assisted and controlled ventilation to patients with tracheotomies and other complex medical problems requiring frequent adjustments in ventilator parameters; administering and monitoring advanced ventilator techniques such as positive end expiratory pressure and continuous positive airway pressure; developing plans for weaning patients from ventilators; assessing the respiratory status of patients using data acquired through physical observation and clinical analysis of blood gas data, chest x-rays, and electrocardiogram to determine the effectiveness of therapy being administered and to make recommendations to physicians regarding changes in treatment; performing the most difficult respiratory therapy procedures to maintain ventilation, including endotracheal intubation, tracheal lavage, and tracheotomy care; and providing in-service training to others in various specialized areas of respiratory care.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability needed to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision. Is able to participate with physicians and nurses and other staff in planning respiratory treatment, with great reliance on the individual's knowledge of the equipment.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide emergency or critical respiratory care; service as a shift leader or supervisor or sole responsible respiratory therapist on a shift; and to plan and conduct training sessions with respiratory therapy students, hospital staff, patients, and family members.
