Responsibilities

Assists in core drilling operations by clearing right-of-way to location and loading and unloading of drill and auxiliary equipment.

Assists in the setting up and operation of auger, cable tool and rotary drilling equipment to obtain samples of soil, rock, etc., for field classification and/or laboratory analysis.

Assists in setting up equipment such as leveling machine and setting up mast on drill rig.

During drilling operations assembles and disassembles drill rods and core barrels using wrenches and other tools.

Assists in removing samples from sample barrels.

Assists in setting downhole instruments (piezometers, slope indicators, monitor wells, etc.).

Aids in maintenance of drilling equipment by cleaning tools and equipment and oiling and greasing parts. Drives a 1 to 5-ton tool and water truck, drill truck, or personnel carrier to and from drill sites. Drives larger vehicles with appropriate CDL

Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): You must have the ability to do the work of a Drill Rig Operator Helper, WG-5729-05, performing common tasks operating heavy equipment, working outside in a variety of weather conditions, working as part of a crew, performing routine maintenance on small equipment, able to follow directions and be in possession of have a valid state driver's license. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires standing for prolonged periods, walking, bending, pushing, pulling and lifting. Handles large diameter bits, 6 to 12 inches, core barrels up to 7-5/8 inches in diameter, and uses 20 foot lengths of drill rods. Uses heavy chain togs to make up tool strings, add and remove drive barrels, lift and screw and unscrew 5 foot lengths of drive pipe weighing 200 pounds. Handles heavy or awkward items with assistance of hoisting equipment or is aided by other employees. There will be times when the above tasks will be done while wearing protective gear required for work on HTW site restricting the employee's movement and ability to perform routine functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outside in all types of weather, frequently in wet, icy, muddy and dirty conditions. Exposed to poison growth, reptiles and constant noisy conditions. Also exposed to cuts and bruises in using tools and working near moving machinery, strains while using heavy tools and equipment, slips and falls in wet or icy weather and from hoisting equipment, and the possibility of electric shock and burns. Danger of drowning exists when working over water.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of hire. Must be willing to travel away from duty station 90% of the time, regardless of weather conditions. Must be willing to submit to a pre-employment physical as well as comply with random drug testing requirements.
