Summary
The operating rooms specialize in caring for adult and geriatric veterans during the perioperative experience in all surgical specialties. The operating room serves as the VISN 10 Orthopedic Center of Excellence. The nurse has the technical and operational knowledge and clinical skills to function as a circulating and scrub nurse. The nurse must demonstrate a variety of specialized diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Responsibilities
The nurse is accountable for promoting patient safety, continuity/quality of care and general well-being of the patient, collaborating with physicians and ancillary services to provide this care.The nurse analyzes and upgrades patient care through quality improvement activities. Monitors activities occurring within the department when acting in the charge nurse capacity. Strives to maintain clinical competencies through continuous study, in-services and participation in obtaining continuing education units. Based on education end experience, may be assigned responsibilities as a preceptor or operating room Ad Pac.
Preoperative assessment end teaching of the patient and family:
RNFA reviews objective and subjective data. Is aware of lab results and pending tests. The assessment includes the patient as a member of a family unit and a member of society. RNFA is aware of cultural and personal influences in the interpretation of assessment data. Communicates findings to the primary surgeon.
Formulation of nursing diagnoses
RNFA interprets the assessment data and plans care appropriate to the pending surgical procedure. Collaborates with the primary surgeon and others to facilitate the pending surgical procedure and the attainment of
favorable patient outcomes.
Recognizes potential hazards and initiates corrective action
RNFA is aware of the environment, observing for potential sources of injury to self, team and the patient. RNFA practices standard precautions at all times and is in observance of OSHA regulations.
Practices within the guidelines established by American Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses
RNFA:
a. Handles tissue
b. Provides exposure
c. Uses instrumentation
d. Sutures
e. Provides hemostasis
f. Closes tissue and skin
g. Performs Initial timeout
h. Assist in preoperative preparations
Continuous assessment of the patient during the intraoperative phase of the surgical experience
RNFA accompanies the patient to the postoperative unit as needed and communicates with patient and family as designated by the primary surgeon. RNFA, in collaboration with the primary surgeon and others, evaluates the attainment of expected outcomes.
Work Schedule:
Possible tours (rotating) 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, 11:00 am to 7:30 pm, 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, w/rotations on call until 7:00 am and 24 hour weekend call coverage

Qualifications
Basic Requirements
:
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR
In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
* Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
Successful completion of an RNFA Program.
Grade Determinations
: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements:
The population of mate and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. This position requires the ability to perform the following physical standards & environmental factors: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds & over; heavy carrying, 45 pounds & over straight putting (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8-12 hour, repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required; ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable © 13' to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20120 and to 20140 in the other, depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Working closely with others; 8 protracted or irregular hours of work. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in Isolation situations or operative/Invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who am combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible Individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
