practices in the Prep-OP Clinic

of the Operative Care Division

at the VA Portland Health Care System

) in Portland, OR

. The Pre-Op NP is an independent member of the Medical Staff with delineated clinical privileges. The Pre-OP NP is a member of an interdisciplinary team preparing patients to safely undergo surgical procedures, as well as other clinical procedures that require anesthesia support.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 0600-2000; Variable 8-Hour Tour

History taking, physical exams, interpreting ECG's.

Ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies in accordance with VA policy and VA formulary/State regulations.

Seeks consultation with physicians whenever cases are outside of scope of practice.

Provide health care teaching related to anesthesia for patients and families.

Takes an active role in interdisciplinary care coordination.

Communicates relevant patient data and initiates communication related to patients.

Acts as a consultant to nursing and medical staff and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship

- Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education:

Master's degree from an accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNCA)(http://www.acenursing.org/) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Certification:

Maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed to.

Licensure:

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

NOTE

* Selectee will need NP License in state of Oregon; can obtain during pre-employment/onboarding process

Nurse Practitioners must maintain full and current certification as a family nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

Preferred Experience:

The preferred candidate will possess prescriptive authority in Oregon; prescription authority is preferred for the continuity of patient care.

Grade Determinations:

The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level

within a grade:

Nurse I Level III

- Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II

- Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III

- Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds, light carrying, under 15 pounds, straight pulling (2 hours), pushing (2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (3 hours), standing (6 hours), kneeling (1.5 hours), repeated bending (2 hours), near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), clear speech) and working closely with other.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
