About the Position:

As a Marine Oiler for the Vicksburg District, River Operations Branch the incumbent will serve under the general supervision of the general engineer on duty who relies on the employee to independently complete assignments in accordance with verbal instructions pertaining to machinery inspection and lubrication at specified intervals and proper lubrication.

NOTE: The position is being advertised internally under Vacancy Announcement Number SWGR186405577479.

NOTE: The duty location of this position will be wherever the M/V Benyaurd is located.

NOTE: This position is a Permanent, Full-Time Seasonal Appointment. You will work approximately 10 months per year and be placed in non pay status when work is unavailable.

Oiling and/or greasing moving parts of machines in the engine room of floating plants, towboats, tenders, dredges, or patrol boats.

Inspecting machinery to prevent damage or overheating.

Using lubricants to grease surfaces and machine parts.

Reading and following plans, sketches or specifications.

Matching correct oil filter, with specific machines in the engine room.

Identifying replacement parts needed to repair machinery such as bearings, gears, cables or chains.

Travel Required

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Marine Oiler without more than normal supervision. which is describe as; Oiling and/or greasing all moving parts of machines in the engine room, and other auxiliary units of towboats, tenders and/or other floating plants. Adjusting automatic oil feed cups to allow proper lubrication, packs grease cups, and screws cap down to force grease to moving parts; smearing grease or pouring oil on chains and guides. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Workers at this level expend light to moderate physical effort when climbing around and inspecting machinery, making adjustments, and applying lubricants. Oilers are walking, climbing, or standing almost continuously. They occasionally expend strenuous physical effort such as lifting and moving heavy parts, operating chain hoists and pry bars, sledge hammering, etc., when assisting with repairs.


Work is performed mostly inside, where the engine room temperature is usually uncomfortably above normal. Moving machinery subjects incumbent to injury such as cuts, shock, burns, falls on slippery equipment and decks, and drowning. Considerable physical and mental concentration is expended due to running machinery during greasing and oiling and adjusting operations.
