Social Worker (Suicide Prevention Coordinator)
Scope of Assigned Duties:
Serves as a staff resource on prevention and risk management strategies. Interviews Veterans to establish facts about the Veteran's situation, presenting problems and the impact of such problems on the Veteran's functioning and health. Interprets and explains VA's treatment and benefit programs. Reviews all referral data from social workers, case managers, managed care staff and discharge planners to identify patients' needs. Provides staff education on suicide interventions. Makes a clinical assessment identifying the Veteran's needs and strengths. Uses advanced clinical training, insight, and experience to interpret data and to identify viable treatment options. Assesses high risk factors, acuity, and need for VHA services and community services. Conducts suicide risk assessment and develop safety plans. The incumbent must has the ability to serve Veterans who may be experiencing severe crises, lack family or an adequate community support, frequently fail to comply with instructions and treatment, or have significant deficits in coping skills and require continuing professional psychosocial support.

Duties include, but not limited to:
Responds to referrals from the Veterans Military Crisis Line.
Conducts community outreach and education on suicide prevention strategies.
Assures the transfer of health care, both inpatient and outpatient to the appropriate VHA and community resources. When provision of direct services is indicated, develops psychosocial treatment plans in coordination with other social workers, case manager, managed care staff and discharge planners.
Using known available resources and the initial assessment of the Veteran's likelihood to accept differing types of assistance makes initial and continuing decisions regarding use of VHA services and referrals. Arrives at a reasoned conclusion as to the preferred course of agency action. Provides independent consultation and makes recommendations to interdisciplinary team on course of treatment. This will require an intimate knowledge of VHA programs and community services, and the ability to match Veteran's needs with the appropriate resources.
Provides clinical services to Veterans and family members/ significant others in support of the Veteran's treatment. Gives advice, guidance, emotional support, and other assistance. Provides individual and group counseling services, including psychotherapy in some settings. Assists and encourages Veterans and significant others in facing problems, thinking them through, evaluating the situation realistically, considering alternative courses of action, and arriving at plans for using resources to resolve problems.
Explains Veteran's treatment and progress to third parties as appropriate. Manages the quality control and evaluation of the professional services provided. Devises methods of obtaining data, and evaluates data to determine the effectiveness of treatment. Identifies consistent qualities of successful treatment and of failed treatment.
Serves as a mentor to other Social Worker staff members, particularly those at the entry level. Provides day-to-day direction for Social Workers, and other Social Work Service staff members. Is viewed by Social Workers and interdisciplinary team members as a senior clinician with advanced practice skills and expertise. May serve as a clinical team lead for multiple social work staff, to include peer supports.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Senior Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. At least two years should be in an area of specialized social work practice. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice). Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty (see paragraph 3a(c)). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (b) below.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment services.
2. Advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with polytraumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.
3. Advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services. Ability to coordinate the delivery of specialized psychosocial services and programs. Ability to design system changes based on empirical findings.
4. Ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in the specialty area, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills. Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or for specialty certifications.
5. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention to identify and address specialized clinical needs. Ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.

Traveling throughout the medical center and the community is required, as is performing activities involving sitting, walking, and standing, carrying such item as books, papers, and files. In carrying out responsibilities it may be necessary for the incumbent to travel into the community where he/she conducts interviews with the Veterans, their families, representatives of community health and welfare agencies and law enforcement agencies. The incumbent must possess current driver;s license and drive a government vehicle in carrying out professional duties when deemed necessary.
