This is a journeyman level position, candidates are expected to possess the necessary skills to assume the full responsibility of the position with minimal training upon hire.
The journeyman level Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic independently performs maintenance, repair, installation, modification, overhaul, trouble shooting and adjustments to complex heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment throughout VAPHS. This includes energy control systems, sub-systems, speed drive units, motor controls, compressors, refrigerant controls, and automatic expansion valves. The use of computers, multi-meters, flow diagrams, wiring diagrams, electrical and electronic schematics, manufacturer's technical
manuals, contract drawings and specifications and a variety of test instruments are needed for successful completion of assigned task. Some tools used in this position include, basic and specialized hand tools multi-meters, amp meters, barometers, differential pressure onometers and psychrometers.Possession of certifications for use and repair of refrigerants and refrigerant systems is preferred.
a. Refrigeration: Adjust, repair, install, and perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration compressors, associated equipment, components,walk-in, refrigerators, freezers, domestic refrigeration, medical and pharmaceutical refrigeration.
b. Air Conditioning: Adjust, repair, install, and perform preventive maintenance on all air conditioning equipment which includes chillers, air handling units, and heating and cooling coils. This includes all free-standing, central, and window air conditioners.
c. Controls Pneumatic: Adjust, repair, install, and perform preventive maintenance on all pneumatic temperature and pressure controls which include the valves that they operate.
d. Controls Electronic: Adjust, repair, install components of, and perform preventive maintenance on electronic controls such as DDC systems for HVAC and/or refrigeration controls and chiller plant DDC control systems.
e. Electrical: Adjust, repair, install, and perform preventive maintenance on all electrical controls and electrical services from the unit disconnect.This includes all switches, relays, solenoids, and other electrically operated equipment on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
f. Air Handling Units and Supply Ductwork: Adjust, repair, install, and perform preventive maintenance on all types of filters, controls, dampers, coils, valves, and ductwork.

: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
: The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to fifty pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing and replacing units, such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms where the systems worked on are frequently in hard to reach places, and stooping, bending,stretching and kneeling are required for long periods of time.
Most work is performed inside, but the mechanic is frequently subject to sudden temperature change when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units. The mechanic is occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shock, and respiratory aggravation. Exposure to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to the eyes, skin, and internal organs. The mechanic may also be exposed to high voltage, dust, chemicals, solvents, and contagious disease. The mechanic is occasionally required to work outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped, confined areas with low overheads. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing may occasionally be worn as necessary when there is a possibility of exposure to hazards such as toxic refrigerants. The AC Mechanic works on large, complex systems with large quantities of refrigerants, exposing the mechanic to the potential of escaping gases when making emergency repairs. Mechanics are often exposed to dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin.
