Medical Instrument Technologist (Polysomnography)
-The Lead Sleep Technician displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in all Sleep Diagnostic procedures and other related procedures in accordance with the guidelines established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and policies and procedures of Orlando VA Medical Center. Lead Sleep Techs must be reliable, able to work independently and be self-motivated.

Lead Sleep Techs are able to interact fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare. They are able to conduct full sleep studies and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep. Duties include but are not limited to:
Communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers.
Maintenance of confidentiality of patients/employee information, electronic and printed.
Age-specific care and education, as identified in the Age-Specific Competencies, including knowledge of changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and Generic age groups; ability to assess and interpret data about the patient's status; and ability to identify age-specific needs and provide the appropriate care based upon the age-related factors noted. The sleep tech provides care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area (i.e. adult and geriatric patient populations).
Functioning in the Medical Center in a safe manner including infection control and the correct operation of equipment.
Assists Supervisor in writing and developing SOPs and competencies appropriate for skills in work area.
Responsible for organizational and quality duties in regard to inventory management, cleanliness or rooms, infection control, troubleshooting problems and notifying appropriate persons regarding computer equipment and software.
Assist in annual competency training of sleep techs, in conjunction with Supervisor.
Toubleshoot patient issues in CPAP clinics whether group or individual clinics.
8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Monday - Friday) - Alternative Work Schedule may be available.

English Language Proficiency:
Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
No certification is required. However, registration by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.
At least one (1) full year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-8), which is directly related to the duties related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide all aspects of polysomnography series. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Polysomnography.
2. * Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
4. * Ability to manage and supervise employees.
5. * Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
