Responsibilities

This position is located in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Patient Care Service within the Tennessee Valley Health System, located in Murfreesboro and Nashville, TN. The Physical Therapy Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures from the physical therapist or physician. Plans and implements specialized treatment programs and applies physical therapy procedures to patients under the general supervision of a physical therapist.

Completes a preliminary review/examination of patient data (including medical history), compiles and organizes pertinent information, and develops/presents a patient profile to be used in assessing patient's status. Assists with or renders a course of treatment based on the assessed needs of the patient, developing progressive types of physical therapy treatment programs. This is done in consultation with a physical therapist or physician.

Assists the therapist in development of a comprehensive specialized treatment plan that includes both long-term and short-term goals. Persuades and motivates Veteran's and family members to participate in treatment plans and comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities. Interacts with the patient and family regarding goals for treatment.

Performance of, or independently performs, highly specialized and diversified treatment procedures. Utilized the full range of modalities including heat, cold, sound, electricity, and massage. Administers non-complex active and passive therapeutic exercise. Fits, adjusts, and instructs patients in the use of orthoses, prostheses, and mobility appliances. Instructs, motivates, and assists patient to learn activities of daily living and improve functional activities. Prepares and maintains appropriate equipment and supplies required for these treatments

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 pounds and over); heavy carrying (45 pounds and over); straight pulling (0.5 hours); pushing (0.5 hours); reaching over shoulders; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (6 hours); standing (6 hours); kneeling (5 hours); repeating bending (5 hours); climbing, use of legs and arms; both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; good vision; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: Your starting salary (grade) will be recommended by a professional standards board based on your professional experience. In addition to the basic requirements, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade.

GS-7:

1. Ability to organize data, format that data into a presentation, and present information pertinent to patient care in formal or informal settings. Examples may include providing in-service training to staff or formal presentations to the treatment team.

2. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. This may be demonstrated through continuing education courses, in-service training, or journal article reviews.

3. Ability to independently implement selected components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
