Tour of Duty

: Mixed Tour

- Monday - Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm. Alternate Work Schedule may be available at a later date. Alternate Work Schedule is an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement that is scheduled in less than 10 days; i.e., eight 9-hour days/nights, one 8-hour day/night, and one day off.

Mixed Tour Work Schedule:

Mixed tour is a combination of periods of full-time, part-time, and intermittent work schedules which allows the best utilization of the employee based on the work requirements of the organization. Whenever there is a change in the workload, your work schedule may be changed to full, part-time or intermittent.

Relocation expenses may not be authorized.

Candidates must clear the fingerprint process and initiate the required background investigation prior to selection.

Responsibilities

The full performance of this position will:

Explain work requirements, methods and procedures as needed, giving special instructions on difficult or different operations and answering technical questions about work.

Formulate and issue special instructions for non-routine or complex assignments and clarifies published guidelines or procedures.

Develop procedures related to such projects as geographic coding, geographic data reconciliation, special projects, boundary updates, digitizing, etc.

Use sophisticated interactive software, large databases, and investigative methods.

Update spatial digital databases with the most complex digitizing assignments.

Assign geographic location codes to very complicated sets of substandard and/or conflicting address information requiring an in-depth knowledge of Internet search engines.

Research and resolve discrepancies between geographic databases that require in-depth knowledge of the databases and processing methods to resolve geographic problems of a very complex nature.

Develop responses to geographically oriented problems initiated by telephone calls and correspondence from other divisions in the Bureau, other Federal agencies, and various agencies or persons outside the Federal government in both the public and private sectors.

Assume responsibility of mapping projects that are moderate in scope and are related to a larger diversified operation.

Keep current on changes to geographic software and communicate this information, including any new training required, to branch employees.

Document productivity and quality levels, recommending appropriate methodology, processing workflow, and technical changes to branch management.

Coordinate activities that pertain to this integration of universal technologies, including Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and commercially available Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into census processing methods.

Train newly hired cartographic aids in digital or manual plotting of political and statistical boundary allocations, and geographic coding.

Perform actual production work in various areas such as cartographic, digital and clerical operations. Review completed work in these areas for errors.

Specialized Experience

Grade 09 Specialized Experience: In addition to the basic entry requirements, you must have one year of experience as a Geographer at the grade 07 level in the Federal Service or one year of equivalent professional work experience. Examples of such work include: performing as an assistant to a higher graded geographer and involves the compiling of geographic facts from a variety of specified sources. Discrepancies in data are ascertained, discrepancies remedied, and information is presented in the appropriate format.

Grade 11 Specialized Experience: In addition to the basic entry requirements, you must have one year of experience as a Geographer at the grade 09 level in the Federal Service or one year of equivalent professional work experience. Examples of such work include: integrating geographical information for presentation from a regional or topical view point; presenting and illustrating geographic information in narrative and graphic form; using basic statistical methods; and carrying out basic field research including the mapping of phenomena, assists with the design and programming of automated production and control systems.

Education Substitution

Grade 09: You have a Master's Degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree in Geography or related field.

Grade 11: 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree in Geography or a related field or a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations, (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Education Requirements

Basic Entry Requirements For All Grade Levels: A.

Degree: geography or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. Or B

Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in geography or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field.
