Summary

The Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders unit is seeking highly skilled and professional LPN's for this specialty unit.

Duties include:

Delivers care to the patient in respect, non-judgmental manner and according to patient's plan of care. Sets limits within the nurse/patient relationship which are clearly defined.

Recognizes significant changes in patient's condition/response to the Registered Nurse.

Accurately documents and retrieves patient information utilizing CPRS.

Performs aspects of patient education as directed (i.e., health promotion, glucometer, B/P monitoring, etc.).

Maintains a safe/clean work environment.

Adheres to standards or practice and safe technique in preparation and administration of medicine.

Observes patient for adverse effect from medication and reports to the RN Care Manager.

Employs appropriate lifting/moving/transfer techniques/devices.

Possesses knowledge of proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment.

Works effectively with patients/families/visitors/co-workers/ and/or members of the other services to promote positive interactions.

Other duties, as assigned.

Responsibilities

The Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders unit is a new and rapidly growing specialty bed unit at the Syracuse VA medical center that provides the full spectrum of care, from rehabilitation of new injuries to chronic medical care of prior spinal cord injuries. Some of the care that patients on the unit may require include medical education and management, bowel and bladder education and care, wound management, and management of a variety of intravenous access methods such as peripheral lines, central and PICC lines. Common diagnoses seen on the unit are quadriplegia, paraplegia, recent surgeries, new injury rehabilitation, and a variety of neurologic conditions such as multiple sclerosis and ALS.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Candidate must be a graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLNAC) at the time you completed the program. Exceptions include: (1) Health care education in the military service or training in the military service that is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure meets the education requirements. (2) Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school.

Candidate must have a full, active, current and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse in s State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or District of Columbia.

LPN/LVN nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations:

GS -3: None beyond the basic requirements.

GS -4: Meeting the basic requirements and 6 months of qualifying experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

GS -5: Meeting the basic requirements and Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent (candidate demonstrates knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.

GS -6: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS -5 level or equivalent (candidate has demonstrated knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patient's conditions; utilizes judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS -6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS -3 to GS -6.

Physical Requirements: Be able to lift and carry moderate weight (up to 44 lbs.), stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, pull/push, reach above shoulders and use both hands and fingers. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and random drug screen is a condition of employment.
