Building Inspector I or II - Support Services Division - Austin

Responsible for the Statewide oversight of inspection activities for Building and facilities construction projects. Acts as field representative for facilities management regarding progress and problem resolution. Provides technical assistance in support of implementation, oversight and review of activities. Coordinates with licensed professional architect or engineer, who has full authority for final approval of project work. Reports to the Facilities Project Development Manger. Work requires travel. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities, including contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Duties

The essential duties for this job include:

Building Inspector I (K098)

Operates TxDOT vehicle in conducting inspections of contract building facilities and related structures in accordance with codes, plans and specifications.

Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications as related to code compliance issues.

Consults with Project Architects/Engineers and contractor's superintendents on work progress, construction issues and matters related to inspection compliance as needed.

Assist Project Architects in the review of shop drawings, monthly pay estimates, contract's proposals, requests for information, architectural instructions and change orders.

Verifies adequate levels of resources are assigned to projects; ensures contractor is performing according to the project requirements.

Oversees construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports.

Attends monthly construction meetings and participates in discussion of project and coordinates activities.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Building Inspector II (K099)

Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.

Operates TxDOT vehicle in conducting inspections of contract building facilities and related structures in accordance with codes, plans and specifications.

Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications as related to code compliance issues.

Consults with Project Architects/Engineers and contractor's superintendents on work progress, construction issues and matters related to inspection compliance as needed.

This job requires the following:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies

Work Experience

This job requires the following:

Building Inspector I (K098)

7 years in building and facilities inspections; other closely related code compliance inspection activities.

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)

No supervisory experience required.

Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on year per year basis.

Building Inspector II (K099)

9 years in building and facilities inspections; other closely related code compliance inspection activities.

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)

No supervisory experience required.

Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

Safety Impact Certificate

Other Conditions:

This position is determined to be Safety Impact by responsibilities, it will be subject to random drug testing.

Conditions of Employment

Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

A driver record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.

External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.

Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.
