The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agricultures chief scientific research agency and one of the worlds premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.
This appointment is Not to Exceed 2 years, with possible extension up to 4 years total.
The Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit which is located in Corvallis, Oregon, is seeking a temporary, full time, Research Associate (Research Geneticist). The incumbent will be assigned to the Hop Breeding and Pathology project and will be physically be located in
U.S. citizens, permanent residents who meet certain eligibility requirements and non-citizens who meet certain eligibility requirements

The incumbent will participate as a team member, working with a geneticist, a pathologist, and an advisory committee composed of hop growers and brewers. Incumbent will conduct hop breeding research that seeks to combine disease resistance, desirable brewer sensory traits, and superior agronomic performance with broad adaption. The incumbent will have leadership responsibilities for all activities involving the evaluation, selection, propagation, and advancement of hop clones within large hop breeding populations.
The position is based in the Yakima Valley with field and greenhouse activities in the Yakima and Willamette Valleys.
Occasional travel - Monthly travel required to conduct experiments, attend meetings, and receive training.

This position requires a Ph.D in plant breeding, plant genetics, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Advanced knowledge of traditional and molecular plant breeding and genetics, statistics, and experimental design is highly desired.
Highly desirable candidates are well organized, operate independently, possess creativity to use their advanced knowledge of plant breeding to improve the production and use of hops. Because the research is closely coordinated with brewer and hop grower stakeholders, excellent communication skills are critical.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
