Major Duties

GS 13:

Serves as a specialist in chromatographic, spectrographic and instrumental analysis in the Laboratory. Performs specialized and fundamental research projects to develop and improve laboratory methods used in the examination and identification of specimens such as gun powder residues, etc.

Performs independent research, having demonstrated, through satisfactory planning and execution of one or a few research studies.

Modifies and adapts standard methods and procedures of chemical analysis; reviews literature and determines methods which appear feasible.

Reviews current scientific publications and other literature for reports of advances, developments and improvements relevant to the Laboratory's analytical methods.

This position has a specific education requirement; all applicants must verify completion of this basic educational requirement by submitting a copy of their college transcripts by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Qualification requirements: All candidates must meet the basic requirements specified under A or B below:

All candidates must meet the basic requirements specific under A or B below:

A, Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

or

B. Combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must have been sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major study in the appropriate field.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.

Selective Placement Factor

Must have experience with explosives, propellant, or pyrotechnic preparatory methods that includes synthesis and/or formulation of energetic materials. (Please show this experience in resume)

In addition to the Selective Placement Factor above, all applicants must meet the specialized experience listed below.

Specialized Experience (SE):

GS-13: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. SE is defined as follows:

Improvised Explosives (IEs) preparatory methods, handling procedures, safety protocols, and explosives test range processes that are unique to TIEDS

Experience working with a wider variety of energetic materials to provide support to the TIEDS Synthesis supervisor and other TIEDS scientist.
