Responsible for the administration and distribution of medication to inmates, in accordance with medication orders of physicians, dentists, mid-level providers, and other appropriately privileged staff. Uses Medication Administration Record to document all medications administered. Assists in maintaining accurate Medication Administration Records (MARS). Reports and records adverse medication reactions. Seeks immediate medical assistance for inmates with severe adverse medication reactions. Provides complete documentation of medication refusals and incidents.
Assists Pharmacist or other appropriate staff member in a variety of pharmacy related activities, including, but not limited to, entry of physician orders into a computerized pharmacy information system, preparation of medications for Pharmacist review, preparation of medication administration records, storage and inventory of pharmacy supplies, etc. Assists in maintaining sanitation of the pill line administration area and pharmacy area and adheres to infection control policies and procedures as applicable.
Completes medication inventory and assists Pharmacist or Health Services Administrator in placing automated medication orders, and drug related supply orders for the Pharmacy Department. Maintains accurate inventory of all needles, syringes, and controlled substances used to replace substock inventory. Completes requisitions for medical/surgical supply requirements.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
Occasional travel - Travel may be required for training.

A four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

GL-05 and GL-06:
You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is directly related experience that includes support duties to medical or health personnel. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Some examples of this qualifying experience are:
Experience in assisting in maintaining sanitation of a medication administration area adhering to infection control policies and procedures as applicable.
Experience in ordering and maintaining medical supplies and equipment.
Experience in explaining medication instructions to patients.
Experience in maintaining accurate inventories of all needles, syringes and controlled substances.
Experience in preparing medications for Pharmacist review and placing automated medication orders.
Experience in reporting and recording adverse medication reactions.
Experience in administering medications (i.e. sublingual, buccal, eye, ear, nasal, topical, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous).
Combination of Education and Experience:
Have a combination of education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position. The following Selective Placement Factor must be included in vacancy announcements.

This position requires the knowledge gained through one or more of the following: a medication administration training program, a certified nursing assistant or medical assistant program which included instruction on medication administration, certified pharmacy technician program, vocational nursing program, or paramedic training program. Evidence of program completion is required. The incumbent is required to successfully demonstrate initial competence to administer medications, and on-going competence in administration. If the incumbent is a licensed vocational nurse, paramedic, or certified pharmacy technician state licensure or certification (as appropriate) must be maintained.
Evidence of completion of a program such as a medication administration program, certified nursing assistant, or medical assistant program, MUST
include information which verifies the program included instruction on medication administration (i.e. transcripts that include coursework in Pharmacology or Medication Administration, etc.).

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.
Successful completion of the Introduction to Correctional Techniques, three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
This position has been identified as test designated. Incumbents will be subject to urinalysis testing under the BOP Drug Free Workplace Plan.
