Responsibilities

This incumbent is under the direct supervisory control of the Mental Health Associate Chief of Staff. However, the incumbent practices independently, using professional judgment and expertise to make decisions about services and treatment provided to veterans and family members/significant others. Position serves to facilitate implementation of suicide prevention strategies within the VA Black Hills Health Care System to help ensure that all appropriate measures are being taken to prevent suicide in our patient population. Activities will include support for the identification of Veterans at high risk; coordination of enhanced care when needed; and education of providers, Veterans, families, and members of the community on risk factors and warning signs of suicide and available treatment options. The incumbent functions as a coordinator of care for Veterans at a heightened risk for suicide and serves as an advisor to facility leadership, program managers, supervisors, and staff concerning suicide prevention strategies for individual patients. The incumbent also serves as a resource person for the facility, Veterans, and the community as a whole. This position is a Social Worker within the BHHCS (Fort Meade, Hot Springs, and Rapid City Clinic) Mental Health Service Line. The area of responsibilities also includes all CBOC's within the system of care. This position is 75% administrative and 25% Clinical.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

*U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

*A master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

*Licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

*Physical requirements.See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

*English Language Proficiency.Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.

Preferred Experience: Experience providing professional, independent social work services in the area of Suicide Prevention.

Grade Determinations: GS-12 Social Worker Program Coordinator

(a) Experience, Education and Licensure. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator or manager must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level. Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs below:

(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. In-depth knowledge of the program coordinated, and demonstrated knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.

2. Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.

3. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.

4. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet multiple deadlines, and evaluate assigned program area(s).

5. Ability to provide training, orientation, consultation and guidance within clinical specialization of practice.

(c) Assignments. Program coordinators at the GS-12 grade are administratively responsible for a clinical program providing treatment to patients in a major specialty, such as in this case, Suicide Prevention. They may be the sole practitioner in this specialty at the facility and typically provide direct patient care services in the program area. They manage the daily operation of the program, develop policies and procedures for program operation, and prepare reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. They may be responsible for the program's budget.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 12.

Physical Requirements: Must be mentally alert and prepared to address patients in highly volatile situations. There will be frequent keyboarding to operate a computer. This is mostly a sedentary position with no special physical requirements.
