Lead Medical Support Assistant
The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant in the Patient Care Services. The incumbent works at a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs/VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

The Lead MSA monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues and maintains efficient workflow. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: assuring coverage of all areas of responsibility; conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures; orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees; ensuring all training requirements are met; organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas; and acting as liaison between MSA and staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts. The work requires a practical knowledge of the standard procedures, medical records, and medical terminology of the unit supported. Work is performed in a variety of pre-approved tours of duty and may include work on holidays and weekends.
Provides orientation to medical support assistants with detailed job instructions regarding medical support procedures
Review the work of new medical support assistants closely for errors, making corrections and re-instructing as necessary
Assists new medical support assistants to develop the ability to make work priority decisions
Coordinated the work schedule of the medical support assistants by assigning them based on the workloads of the units by conducting frequent rounds on the units and personally assisting in the heaviest workload areas.
Assists all medical support assistants with daily practice problems and/or questions.
Keeps the supervisor informed of individual practice problems and/or the need for additional educational interventions.
Provides regular leave coverage to wards/units in the absence of the assigned medical clerks; and secondary coverage on a routine basis to enhance support.
Schedules follow-up appointments when necessary.
Working knowledge of AcuStaf
Performs other related duties as assigned
Monday through Friday, rotating shifts, with occasional weekend and holiday coverage

You must be a current, permanent employee of the Pittsburgh VA Healthcare System.

: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06 - Advanced MSA). Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: scheduling, canceling and re-scheduling appointments/consults; entering no show information; monitoring electronic wait list; ensure encounters are complete in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; and performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre-authorization requirements.
