The Physician Assistant (PA) provides direct clinical services at the Beaumont Outpatient Clinic (BOPC) for the ACOS-CBOCs. The PA works within the Mental Health Service Line primarily in the outpatient clinic, providing specialty mental health services to the Veterans in the community. The PA will adhere to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice and demonstrate leadership when providing patient care. The psychiatric PA's duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Provide mental health specialty care to adults in the General Mental Health Clinic which includes psychiatric screening /evaluation, completing a full psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, psychiatric medication management, counseling/education and coordination of the veteran's overall mental health care and treatment for a diagnostically diverse population.
Management of patient care with and prescription of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
Routinely collaborates with supervising physician and members of the inter-professional care team to assure patient data is shared with appropriate staff.
Order, interpret and perform interventions based on diagnostic studies including certain radiology and laboratory studies.
Collaborate with members on the interdisciplinary team related to coordinating the patient's mental health care and treatment planning.
Collaborate with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; and providing a full range of care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems.
Communicate with patients, families, caregivers, and other disciplines to identify, analyze, and resolve problems affecting patient care.
Perform ongoing review and data collection from the electronic medical record to assess compliance with quality care performance measures.
Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventative care, medical conditions and prescribed treatments and drugs, and other duties as assigned.
Performs preventive health activities (including intradermal testing).
Orders appropriate prosthetic devices and medical equipment.
Experience in quality assessment and improvement activities
Ability to coordinate the resolution of bio-ethical issues with patients, families, and significant others.
Excellent communication skills as well as the ability to correspond and report in an accurate and timely manner.
Ability to utilize sound judgment in making administrative decisions including the ability to accurately interpret and implement VAMC policies.
Demonstrated dependability and flexibility.
Computer literacy for data input and retrieval required.
Familiarity with DHCP and CPRS preferred.
Ability to work independently and make highly competent professional judgments and decisions, as well as evidence of solid clinical acumen.
Work Schedule: TO BE DETERMINED BUT MAY INCLUDE EXTENDED HOURS AND WEEKENDS

Education. The candidate must meet the following:(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Certification(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5. (3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
