You will serve as a Rigger in the Public Works Division of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST

You will use and maintain rigging materials and equipment (e.g., jacks, tackle blocks, chain falls, shackles, wire and fiber ropes) to accomplish rigger tasks.

You will repair, cut, and splice weight handling equipment used on a day-to-day basis.

You will estimate size, wieght, and equipment capacity for clearnace and safety factors.

You will assemble and repair nets, pendants, slings, and other rigging gear used for day-to-day operations.

Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver?s license.

You will be required to obtain and maintain current licensing and special certiciation for activities such as aerial work on platforms, operating forklifts, and/or handling of explosives and hazardous materials.

You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to do the work of a Rigger without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Selecting and installing weight handling gear used in lifting, moving, and positioning a variety of large and heavy objects; 2) Using a variety of tools and equipment such as marlin spikes, fids, serving mallets, rigger's screw, and swaging machine to splice, form, and finish the rigging gear; 3) Cutting, splicing, assembling, repairing, installing, standing, and running rigging in accordance with specifications, instructions, or work orders.

Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 lbs. Mechanical lifting devices/other employees are available to assist with lifts of more than 40 lbs. Lifts items such as cables, chains, and dollies. Continually reaches, bends, stoops, pushes, and pulls. Must walk and stand for prolonged periods of time. Frequently climbs on platforms, machines, and other structures to signal crane operator. Works in cramped and awkward positions while installing rigging in confined areas.

Work is indoors or outdoors subjecting the employee to all types of weather. Is subject to possible cuts and burns while handling wire and fiber ropes; cuts, bruises, and broken bones from falls while climbing and attaching rigging to the load; potential serious injury from swinging loads, breaking slings and falling objects. Various protective devices such as hard hats, safety shoes, and gloves are used to minimize these conditions. Possibility of falling from heights.
