The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
Performing and directing others in receiving fire reports.
Inputting data into a number of fire-related computer applications.
Coordinating aviation dispatch operations.
Determining appropriate resource response to incidents and requests from the field and dispatches personnel, equipment, aircraft, and/or supplies.
Organizing and reviewing completed records of all orders placed and actions taken to ensure adherence to established operation procedures.
Providing critical logistical support information to supervisor and making recommendations concerning the efficient uses of available resources.
Recording and maintaining communication logs.
Coordinating and assisting with fire training and orientation.
Making recommendations for improvement, and updating/developing operating plans and mobilization guides.
Providing assistance on problems encountered by lower level dispatch personnel.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting. The work involves long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency/intensity levels with irregular breaks and mealtimes. The duties of this position create a highly stressful environment during peak activity, requiring the ability to keep calm in emergency situations. Incumbent must be able to cope with the pressure of meeting timeframes and changing priorities. Mental concentration and accuracy are required.
Occasional travel - At times, travel for meetings and/or training may be required. During times of peak fire activity additional travel may be required.

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires special qualifications that have been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as screen out elements. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:
Wildland Firefighting Experience Requirement: This position requires previous wildland firefighting experience (at least 90 days). Wildland firefighting experience is defined as experience gained through work on the fire line in containment, control, or suppression of wildland fire. Experience may be related to wildfires or fire line experience on a prescribed fire (this does not include experience in the planning stages).
In addition to the selective factors:
For GS-06: One year of specialized wildland fire management experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Examples: serving as a dispatcher, receiving, filing, and tracking resource request for fire and other emergency incidents; dispatching personnel, equipment, aircraft, and/or supplies in response to resource order forms; and providing logistical support information to supervisor and making recommendations concerning the efficient uses of available resources. - OR - One year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education DIRECTLY related to the work of the position.
For GS-07: One year of specialized wildland fire management experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples: Serving as a dispatcher, determining location, land status, and current fire information; coordinating various dispatch operations; and receiving, filing, and tracking resource request for fire and other emergency incidents, anticipating fire suppression needs and determining resource allocation. - OR - One year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education DIRECTLY related to the work of the position.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. See examples above.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
Appointment is subject to meeting 1-year probationary requirements.
RELOCATION EXPENSES:Travel, transportation and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
This is a LONG-TERM CAREER SEASONAL position (6 to 11 1/2 months). It is expected that the incumbent will work at least 6 months per year, but not more than 11 1/2 months. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.
This position at times may require overtime and shift work.
