These positions are located within the Surgical Department Operating Room at the VA Syracuse, NY. The Surgical Technician - Operating Room is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. Participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures such as thoracic,major vascular, neurosurgery,microsurgery, urology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, a full range of general surgery cases, minimally invasive procedures, and orthopedic surgery;
-Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment,microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, etc.;
-Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals;
-Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups;
-Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeons;
-Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment;
-Assists with the care of the patient such as positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies;
-Assists the surgeon by performing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures;
-Assesses equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials;
-Assists surgical team members to identify and implement performance improvement measures; and
-Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Day and Evening Rotation and On Call Rotation requirements.

Physical Requirements: The duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients,most of which are at varying stages of consciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. The person in this position must be dexterous in safely passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon.
The duties are performed in the operating rooms (OR) which require special OR attire with regular and recurring exposure to toxic chemicals and noxious gases such as methylmethracrylate, exposure to x-rays, and pure oxygen, exposure to blood and body fluids which are often infectious, and laser beams requiring special safety precautions. Appropriate scrub attire is required, including sterile gown and gloves, surgical caps to cover hair, and surgical mask in order to provide an aseptic environment in the OR. Must wear protective eyewear such as goggles or face shield to prevent inadvertent splash injuries to eyes. Appropriate laser glasses must be worn when working with lasers. Must frequently wear a 20-30 pound lead apron as protection from radiation during various procedures. The OR work environment is complex, intense, and fast paced. Good mental and emotional health is required in order to function at an optimum level.

Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician - Operating Room. Specialized experience is experience that requires application of the knowledge,methods and techniques to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician including providing assistance to a surgical team during surgical procedures; functioning as the primary scrub person handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures; preparing, organizing, and maintaining highly complex sterile surgical setups; observing and responding to each stage of a surgical procedure to anticipate the needs of the surgeon; handling specimens appropriately; and cleaning and decontaminating instruments before and after procedures. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties,month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
Education: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician - Operating Room position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE:Transcripts (unofficial or official)must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician - Operating Room position.
