Physician Assistant (PA)
The Physician Assistant (PA) functions relatively independently as guided by approved clinical protocols, and privileges, functioning within the scope of practice for a licensed PA. This incumbent works in the Outpatient Section of Mental Health Services at WJBD VAMC Outpatient Clinics located Florence & Orangeburg, South Carolina. They consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. The PA is directly responsible to the Chief of Mental Health Service.

The incumbent offers treatment in the form of assessment, clinical consultation and psychological assessment, to other members of the team. He/she diagnoses mental disorders, conducts physical and psycho-social assessments, provides emergent and follow-up treatment of mental disorders through a variety of modalities and provides adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Among the modalities provided are individual and family, psycho-pharmacology, and environmental interventions. Duties performed are not limited to the following:
Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise
Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill multi-symptomatic patients.
Providing diagnostic interviews, assessments and psychotherapy for adult patients.
Provision of direct patient care, consultation services-on difficult or complex cases, and education of staff.
Successfully integrates the activities of the employee's assignment with other patient care programs at the facility and with similar programs on a broader geographic basis.
Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
Uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision making, and evaluating outcomes.
Uses professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities.
Guides, develops and staff from a leadership perspective.
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. may require some work during non-administrative hours and weekends.

Physician Assistants (PAs) appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
The candidate must meet the following: (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5. (3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
