Physical Demands \/ Work Environment: The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Responsibilities Surveying work requires highly proficient operations of instruments and application of techniques to obtain required skills and accuracy. Surveying duties frequently include physically demanding tasks such as assisting Land Surveyors in setting survey monuments; this requires digging holes with shovels and rock bars for prolonged periods, sustained walking with heavy packs of instruments and equipment clearing timber and undergrowth, and driving vehicles over rough terrain. Positions may require frequent travel. GS-03\/04 Performs the full range of standardized survey support and limited technical survey duties. Performs the following duties of similar complexity including but not limited to: Functions as rodman on surveys using various types of rods. Serves as pacer of leveling party, determining in advance, position rodman will occupy. Records survey evidence and measurement dates, stellar observations of meridians and corner descriptions. Indexes field books. Operates transits, theodolites, electronic measuring equipment, satellite positioning instruments, and portable electronic calculators while serving on survey crews performing cadastral, geodetic and control surveys. Computes with programmable calculator, simple survey calculations such as slope to horizontal distance reduction, summation of distances, azimuths, latitudes, and departure coordinates. Assists in monumentation and recording of corner positions of a Cadastral Survey, following previously selected methods of monumentation. Selects and marks bearing trees and bearing objectives. Oversees the setting of posts, construction of accessories, and marking of reference points. GS-05\/06 Performs the full range of survey aid\/technical duties including but not limited to: May serve as principal assistant and occasional crew chief on survey crews, may assist in training and directing activities of other survey aids and technicians, gathers and records survey data, line running, and distance and angle measurement activities. Leads monumentation crew. Plans and directs corner monumentation crew in measurements for corner moves and ties to accessories. Assures proper procedures and methods are used in the monumentation of corners, markings of corners and accessories, and recording of data. Assists senior land surveyors in the reduction of data from raw field form to latitudes and departures for mathematical analysis. Reduces solar and stellar observations for determining azimuth. Reduces raw data in the field while progressing along the survey line. Prepares or reviews the preparation of field notes, random lined diagrams, and computations to determine whether closures are within prescribed lines of accuracy. Computes closures, corner moves, and proportionate measurements for the restoration of lost corners. Enters and retrieves data from automated databases.
