Summary

This position is located within the. The Medical Supply Technician conducting the sterilization and processing of Reusable Medical Equipment at the VA Boston Health System in Brockton, MA. You will be required to travel to the sterilization and processing department (S&P) in all campuses when necessary. The position is required to work as needed on other than normal working tours of duty, either in the evening, nights, holidays or weekends. Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 7:00 am-3:30 pm, 8:00-4:30 pm,10:00 am-6:30 pm,11:00 am-7:30 pm,11:00 pm-7:30 am

Responsibilities

Collects contaminated case carts from operating rooms.

Maintains decontaminates and inspects instruments prior to sterilization by hand washing or by use of the washer sanitize.

Uses judgment in examining items for defects, damage cleanliness, lubricating saws, protecting delicate instruments from damage.

Processes contaminated rigid and flexible endoscopes.

Follows procedures for clean and safe handling of medical devices.

Assembles a full range of instrument sets and trays used throughout the medical center.

Ensures that instrument is assembled appropriately, inspecting for function and cleanliness prior to wrapping, and final sterilization.

Identifies the correct method of sterilization for each instrument and or piece of equipment.

Inspects items for expiration dates and package integrity when assembling case cart for the various departments.

Ensure that par levels of instruments and equipment are maintained at all times.

Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

To qualify at the GS-05 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

GS 05: Specialized Experience: Must possess one (1) or more years of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Supply Technician position. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to at least GS 4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: processing, assembling, troubleshooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and un-sterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers, etc. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.

To qualify at the GS-06 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

GS 6: Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in Federal service (GS-5). Specialized experience is experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, decontamination, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. You must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Your work would have been assigned by a supervisor on a continuing or rotational basis and your work would have been completed independently according to accepted work procedures. Any problems or unusual situations that arise

would have been reviewed by your supervisor or, if problems occur on shift or weekend assignments, independently resolved by you through negotiation and consultation with other medical personnel. Your work was reviewed through on-site inspection of work areas, work reports, and comments from users and hospital's infection committee. Specialized experience may include work as an operating room technician or medical instrument technician where you were responsible for performing these duties.

You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GS 05: Substitution of Education for Experience: Must have successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses directly related to the work of this position in order to meet the specialized experience required. This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, college or university. (Transcripts required).

OR

GS 05: Combination of Education and Experience: You must have equivalent combination of specialized experience as described in A and education as described in B which totals at least one year. Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience (Transcripts required).

GS -6: Education: You must have successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) with course work that is related to the work of this position such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position occupation or an internship that is directly related to the work of this position as a Medical Supply Technician. Some areas that may be related to this field are nursing, medical technology, medicine, clinical laboratory, biological sciences, microbiology, etc. (Transcripts required). ~OR~

Combination: You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed

graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, to meet the total experience requirement. (Transcripts required).

Physical Requirements: The work requires constant physical effort in the receipt, reprocessing, storage and issue of RME, folding of linen items, assembling trays, pans, and case carts, inserting and retrieving loaded sterilized carts from the autoclaves. Hand and eye coordination is required in the disassembly and reassembling of equipment. The worker is exposed to long period of standing, bending and walking while reprocessing reusable medical equipment. Frequent requirement for the lifting of RME, trays and cartons from storage shelves to carts. Workers regularly uses case carts in the delivery of supplies and instruments to the clinical areas within the Medical Center. Material weighs up to 40 pounds
