Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) provides direct clinical services at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center for the Mental Health Care Line (MHCL). The incumbent will be housed within the Inpatient Program, aligned under the Mental Health Care line and will work full-time on the inpatient unit. The 73-bed capacity inpatient program is divided between a 32-bed general inpatient unit, a 21-bed unit that focuses on geriatric care, and a 20-bed specialty inpatient PTSD program. The position involves working on all three units. The PA will collaborate with the attending psychiatrist to diagnosis and treat comorbid medical conditions in Veterans who are admitted to the psychiatric unit. Additionally, the PA may assist in the preparation of a patient for an ECT procedure as well as assisting the attending psychiatrist in patient monitoring during the procedure. The PA will adhere to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice and demonstrate leadership when providing patient care.

Work Schedule: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 7:30am - 6:00pm.

Responsibilities

Provide medical care to adults in the Inpatient Mental Health Program which includes completing history and physicals, diagnosis of medical conditions, medication management for medical conditions, counseling/education and coordination of the veteran's overall medical care.

Performs preventive health activities (including intradermal testing).

Orders appropriate prosthetic devices and medical equipment.

Assisting in the preparation of a patient for an ECT procedure as well as in the patient monitoring process during the procedure.

Routinely collaborates with supervising physician and members of the inter-professional care team to assure patient data is shared with appropriate staff.

Communicate with patients, families, caregivers, and other disciplines to identify, analyze, and resolve problems affecting patient care.

Perform ongoing review and data collection from the electronic medical record to assess compliance with quality care performance measures.

Demonstrated dependability and flexibility.

Computer literacy for data input and retrieval required

Possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; AND a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Certification: Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) Note: Current VA Physician Assistant's employed prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified, remain exempt.

Preferred Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Physician Assistant.

Grade Determinations: Will be made by the Physician Assistant Professional Standards Board based on the information provided by on the Resume and VA Form 10-2850c provided.

The full performance level of this vacancy is VN-0603-13. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of VN-0603-11to VN-0603-13.
