Summary

As a Clinical Dietitian you will be the medical nutrition expert responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutritional care activities for assigned clients. Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals and advises interdisciplinary health care team of nutritional recommendations, goals, and efficacy of nutrition therapy.

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM -4:30 PM and Occasional Saturday

Responsibilities

Duties are not limited too:

Conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients at nutritional risk. Provides initial and on-going nutritional

Develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy in accordance with the patient's medical program goals and objectives.

Calculates nutritional requirements (calories, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, electrolytes, fluid) and necessary diet restrictions or food/drug interactions.

Identifies patients in need of nutrition support and recommends the appropriate mode of nutrition support, including suitable route, formula, and rate of administration.

Utilizes assessment and evaluation techniques that consider age-specific needs as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns.

Orders labs, diets, enteral feedings, and consults per Scope of Practice/Clinical privileges.

Documents nutrition care plan in the patient's medical record, including nutrition assessment data, medical nutrition therapy initiated and recommendations, results of nutrition counseling and discharge planning

Works cooperatively with Food service staff to assure conformance to diet prescriptions.

Uses Microsoft Office programs and commercially purchased software such as Computrition or equivalent as needed in an efficient manner

Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

Documents in the medical record and assesses educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, incorporating a learning approach that considers the cultural, religious, educational, and medical situation of the patient.

Provides appropriate follow-up in accordance with patient's treatment goals, referring patients for outpatient counseling, community or home health service as appropriate.

Participates in community projects and education as needed/assigned.

Serves on Patient Education Committee, Ethics Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutic/Nutrition Committee, Dysphagia Team,Palliative Care Team and other committees as assigned.

Assists in achieving compliance with national VA performance measures, regulatory agency standards, including state, federal, and Joint Commission standards.

May assign and direct the workload of diet technicians and/or diet clerks.

Presents seminars, workshops, and lectures to convey current nutrition information on new and changing concepts.

Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency. Dietitians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

Registration/Certification. All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Education and Supervised Practice. (1) The individual must have earned a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent and fulfilled each of the following criteria:(a) Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic education (CADE). (b) Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program.

(2) Individuals who have earned college and/or university degrees outside the United States and its territories also must have their transcripts evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation service to determine if their degree is equivalent to a degree granted by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States. Validation of a foreign degree does not eliminate the need for verification of completion of didactic program, dietetic internship, or coordinated program requirements. The completion of ACEND didactic program requirements and at least a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university or foreign equivalent are necessary for eligibility to enter an ACEND accredited supervised practice program.

Grade Determinations: At least 1 year of experience as a registered dietitian equivalent to the next lower grade level, or education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field. Employees at this grade level GS-11 serve as staff dietitians at the full performance level.

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of best practices in the dietetics profession and in scientific literature, including knowledge of research methods, study design, data collection, interpretation of findings, and translation of results into nutrition practice.

Ability to comply with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities.

Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies.

Knowledge of computer software programs relative to food service systems.

Knowledge of best practices in areas of clinical nutrition and the ability to apply nutrition interventions to patients with multiple co-morbidities.

Ability to act as a consultant for health care providers including registered dietetic technicians, dietetic interns, nurses, physicians,medical students, and allied health professionals.

The full performance level of this vacancy is 11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 11.

Physical Requirements: This position requires intermittent walking and standing for up to 50% of the tour, routinely carrying written/reference materials. Some of the work is sedentary, involving nutritional plans, research and reports. Use of computer keyboard and mouse to access patient data and record patient encounters is a frequent part of the work and happens intermittently during the day. Moderate lifting: 15-44 pounds; Moderate carrying: 15-44 lbs. Use of fingers, both hands required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13 to 16; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Hearing (aide permitted); Mental and emotional stability, Whisper voice; Environmental factors: Slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working closely with others, and working alone.
