This position is located in the Environmental Management Department at VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS). The Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Health Care System is a dynamic and progressive health care organization dedicated to providing quality, compassionate and accessible care and service to Maryland's veterans. The Baltimore and Perry Point VA Medical Centers in addition to the Loch Raven VA Community Living & Rehabilitation Center and five community based outpatient clinics, all work together to form this comprehensive health care delivery system. The VAMHCS is nationally recognized for its outstanding patient safety, state--of-the-art technology and its reputation as a leader in veterans health care, research and education. This position has openings at Perry Point, Loch Raven and Baltimore. When you apply for Baltimore you will also be considered for Loch Raven.

The applicant functions as a Housekeeping Aid with in Environmental Management Service programs. The applicant works in a variety of patient and non-patient care areas to provide a health healing environment. The primary purpose of this position it to provide cleaning services including but not limited to inpatient and outpatient care areas, research, clinical laboratories, outside grounds, administrative work spaces and other hospital work areas throughout the VAMHCS. The applicant is scheduled for varying of rotation shifts to included weekends. Applicant receives daily assignments from his/her or another assigning supervisor, work leader or other designated personnel in charge.

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

Maintain floors, walls, ceiling, doors, baseboards and stairwells by sweeping, dust mopping, damp mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, polishing and vacuuming

Empty trash cans and waste baskets; replace liner and carrying refuse and trash to central locations

Utilize cleaning chemicals according to ratio direction and adhering to safety precautions

Move and arrange furniture, vacuum and shampoo carpets

Discharge cleaning of patient beds, change bed linen and towels,

Receive clean linen, delivering same as directed

Collect soiled linen for transport from facility

Maintaining acceptable sanitation standards in assigned area(s) in accordance with medical center policy

Report any safety or fire hazards to immediate supervisor

Perform assigned duties without causing avoidable interference to patient care

Maintain good public relations by being courteous, tactful, and diplomatic in all contact with patients, visitors, and staff

NOTE: Some computer experience is preferred; however it not a requirement for the position as a Housekeeping Aid.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. 2. Knowledge of work practices including keeping supplies/equipment neat, organized, clean in accordance with Housekeeping standard within a Hospital/Nursing Home and or other Health Care related facility.

3. Ability to use and maintains equipment, (e.g. scrubbers, high/low speed buffers, vacuum cleaners, we/dry vacuum machine, etc.)

4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications etc. that involve tasks to be performed and equipment operation.

Other significant factors to consider:

Communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers.

Maintenance of confidentiality of patient/employee information, electronic and print.

The medical center performance improvement program.

How to work and function in the medical center in a safe manner, including infection control and the correct operation of equipment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Be able to lift various items up to 50 lbs. Items include, but are not limited to: heavy trash, furniture, clean linen, soiled linen, contaminated/ infectious / biohazard waste, chemotherapy and radioactive waste, as well as other materials that they may come in contact with. Additionally incumbent may be required to lift heavy containers such as stripper/finish and other supplies in large, heavy containers. Must be able to apply and demonstrate proper lifting techniques and body mechanics to safely handle/dispose of these materials. Must be able to apply and demonstrate safe handling of spills of these and other hazardous waste materials that they may come in contact with. Eye acuity to identify soiled items is required by the incumbent. Must push, pull, load and unload carts, bend, stoop, twist and turn with moderate effort, climb ladders to change cubical curtains, clean out light fixture and clean windows and other high surfaces. Must be able to negotiate small spaces to clean.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Regularly moves between contaminated/dirty environments to clean environments. Often works in the presence of blood, body fluids and excretions, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong odors may be present while using cleaning chemicals. There are potential hazards associated with Environmental Service work such as cleaning chemical splash hazards, cuts, sticks, and bumps, and bruises exists if proper precautions are not met. The work area can be noisy due to the rumbling of carts and operation of equipment. Work is generally conducted in an inside headed or air conditioned area however staff must go outside to empty trash and possibly shovel snow from entrances during inclement weather.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
