Summary
The Advance Medical Support Assistant perform administrative operations, initiates/receives/schedules requests for examinations, ordering lab, x-ray and other tests necessary for the examinations, service and clinic reception, providing administrative support, and communicating with VBA staff at various VA Regional Offices throughout the United States.

Responsibilities
The duties of the position include:
* Receiving and scheduling requests for examinations, ordering lab, x-ray and other tests, service and clinic reception, providing administrative support for exams, and communicating with other agencies and organizational activities.
* Providing coverage within the unit during periods of staff absences .
* Scheduling all appointments and notifying patients by telephone and mail of the appointment(s).
* Providing appropriate instructions for reaching exam site and for competing any testing that may be required.
* Preparing paperwork and files for each clinic, ensuring the appropriate forms are included to assure delivery prior to and pick-up after the clinic has been completed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is mostly sedentary and is performed in a clinic responsible for treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems. Normal safety precautions and practices are required for working in a healthcare environment. This position requires emotional ability to deal effectively with multi-tasking and high volume of patient flow. Other physical demands include reaching, bending, stretching, and carrying light loads of supplies.
WORK CONDITIONS:
The employee may rotate to various locations to perform assigned duties in an office, nursing station, or clinic setting in close proximity to clinicians and patients. The work area may be small and congested with patients and staff. the work is in a fast paced, busy environment with multiple interruptions. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Special ergonomic precautions must be taken with sitting and typing. Work involves minimal risks and observance of typical of safety precautions typical of a clinic and office environment. Since work requires a high level of interaction with patients in close proximity to clinic care areas, employees may be exposed to communicable diseases. Employees are required to be tested for TB annually and are offered annual vaccinations to prevent influenza. Additionally, the employee is a times confronted by angry patients or family members, so special violence prevention in the workplace safety precautions are necessary.

Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. Citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified U.S. citizens)
Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position;

One year above high school;

Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-6 LEVEL:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with GS-5 MSA responsibilities. Experience at this level includes, but is not limited to: Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: In addition can demonstrate the following KSAs:
KSA1:
Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
KSA 2:
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.
KSA 3:
Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.
KSA 4:
Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.
KSA 5:
Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process; and Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.
