These positions are assigned to the Outpatient Surgical Clinics of the Surgery Service with the VA Medical Center located in Lexington, KY.

Responsibilities
The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ability to interpret, apply, and follow regulations governing and established outpatient clinic process or practice
Knowledge of medications and their uses and supplies used in an outpatient specialty clinic
Knowledge and ability to set up and assist with any designated outpatient clinical procedure
Supports physicians and other medical professionals in using therapeutic and/or surgical support instruments, equipment, and accessories
Sets up specialized equipment for procedures, setting technical factors, adjusting for patient anomalies, sets operation parameters for equipment, verifies alarms are set within parameters, etc.
Maintains records for routine patient tests or laboratory transactions; receives, labels, and transmits test results and other records; verifies such identifiers as patient identification, time of sample, type of test requested; enters data in control records; monitors transmission to testing laboratory and receipt of result; and obtains and provides basic medical information for patients and caregivers.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-6 grade level, applicants must meet one of the following:
EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Physical Requirements:
High levels of energy and stamina are needed to cope with the demands of a this job. Must be able to work for sustained periods under pressure. Heavy clinics will occasionally require long hours under hectic conditions with no regular break. Ability to be flexible with regards to patient's needs is critical. Good strength and well developed musculoskeletal function are necessary for occasional lifting and positioning or transfer of patients who are sedated. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies. Highly refined dexterity is necessary to handle demands of highly sophisticated procedures and equipment. Visual skills are necessary for evaluation of clinical status of patients and adequacy of small biopsy specimens. There must be a high degree of eye-hand coordination and the ability to assist in lifting or transporting the patient when the need arises. A high degree of care is necessary in working with equipment which presents shock hazard or possible sticks or laceration.
Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:
Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
