There are positions located in the Integrated Surgical Services/Operating Room as well as the Obstetrics/Gynecology department. Incumbents will provide support in handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during minor surgical procedures to more complex and extensive surgical procedures. Positions report to either the Supervisory Clinical Nurse (OR), or the Supervisory Clinical Nurse (OB/GYN).
The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. Responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures.
Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures.
Assists team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies.
Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a level of concentration for extended periods of time.
Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment.
Practices good septic technique, recognizes and verbalizes breaks in technique by self and others.
Assists with the orientation of new personnel in OR procedures and equipment.
Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and ensures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedures.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level; OR
One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrist. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
Providing assistance to surgeons during a variety of procedures (i.e., handle surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment); set up sterile fields with required items for each surgical procedures such as air-powered equipment, fiber-optic equipment, laparoscopy equipment, etc.; handle surgical specimens appropriately; train new operating room staff in the operation of equipment, sterile techniques, handling of instruments or procedures
Selective Placement Factor: The factor below has been identified as a Selective Placement factor. Applicants who possess this factor will be ranked above those who do not. Failure to meet this factor will result in the loss of consideration. You must submit a copy of your certification with your application. Applicants must have a current, unrestricted certification as a Surgical Technician or Technologist from ONE of the following programs: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistant (NBSTSA)
Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP)
National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
