This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER, Position Description Number D1288000and is part of the NC G4, National Guard (G4-MATES/7021-501).

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER, WL-5801-11, you will assign work orders to specific crewmembers and select workers for various jobs on the basis of knowledge, skills, and abilities; pass on to workers instructions received from the supervisor, demonstrate proper work methods, and start work; ensure that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations; work along with other workers and set pace performing non-supervisory repair work of the same kind and level as that done by the group led; check work in progress and when finished for compliance with supervisor's instructions, work orders, and established shop procedures; answer workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives; interpret work instructions and assist lower graded repairers or trainees in the more difficult and complex tasks; provide information to the supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems; assure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed; perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and major repair on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles; troubleshoot, repair and/or overhaul a variety of the mechanically complex major systems to include internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls, cross drive or similar multi-system transmissions and a variety of intricate fuel injection systems; make repairs and modifications to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, brake cylinders, etc.; troubleshoot equipment with a variety of the mechanically complex major systems and diagnose difficult performance problems and the cause of mechanical failures; utilize embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of specialized original equipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nature or extent of repair; remove and disassemble engines and complex major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems; make the appropriate repairs, overhaul, or modifications in accordance with the proper repair specifications and procedures, and improvises repair techniques when standard procedures are not available; reassemble engines and other systems, and adjusts, tests, and reinstalls in vehicles and equipment as necessary; make adjustments and repairs to electrical and suspension systems; repair equipment with a variety of interconnected systems to include state of the art electrical and electronic, fuel injection, interconnected gear reduction, multiple engines, and similarly complex systems; independently perform repairs and maintenance functions with little or no supervision in remote locations; provide technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees within the team; assist lower grade mechanics in performing major repair work on interconnected complex systems such as electrical, air and hydraulic systems, complex state of the art electrical and electronic systems; provide Field and limited Sustainment maintenance at unit locations as part of a contact team.; conduct readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity; perform operational inspections and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly serviced; inspect in-process repair work of lower graded repairer to ensure equipment is being repaired in accordance with pertinent requirements; serve as a commodity inspector during Command Maintenance Management evaluations (COMET) or as a member of a Maintenance Assistance Instruction Team (MAIT); instruct operator/crew in the maintenance of equipment and provide technical advice and assistance to supported units; perform electrical repairs on complex state of the art electrical and electronic systems requiring extensive training on specialized diagnostic equipment to identify problems; assist in the maintenance of production reports and records, and make recommendations to the supervisor; plan, organize, and perform technical analyses; make recommendations to the supervisor as to adjustments necessary to accomplish the work and maximize production; perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidates ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series. Must have the ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment. The ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.
