Responsibilities

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (General Radiology, Computed Tomography and Interventional Radiology) of the Imaging Service currently has two (2) vacancies in the Salem VAMC. The DRT will perform as a fully functional diagnostic radiologic technologist at the advanced level and performs general diagnostic radiography of the entire body. The DRT also performs technical work in support of diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology and computed tomography under the direction of a physician. The DRT's duties include (but not limited to):Performs computed tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis and extremities with and without the use of contrast materials. Assists with CT procedures such as ablations, biopsies, drainages. Must be able to work independently and perform very difficult computed tomography exams without supervision. Assist with a wide variety of special/interventional procedures including preparation and maintenance of sterile field and supplies.

Operates a wide variety of computerized equipment such as Computed Radiography (CR), Direct Digital Radiography (DR), Digital Fluoroscopy, Computer Acquisition and post-processing workstations, PACS viewing stations, WEBPACS desk top viewing software and hospital computer systems such as VISTA and CPRS.

Receives assignments or instructions for very difficult examinations or procedures and interprets routine requests independently from radiologist or medical officers.

Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures by independently explaining procedures, positioning patients for very difficult procedures and desired results, and cushioning and shielding patients as appropriate.

Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures.

Sets up the X-ray room and CT suite ensuring that sterile supplies, local anesthetics, contrast materials, catheters, and other required equipment are present and laid out.

Responsible to the radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs which minimize patient dosage and reduce costs.

Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:45a-4:30p tour of duty with rotating on- call & holidays

-Certified in basic life support (BLS) is required.

The full performance level of this vacancy is 09. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 09.

GS-09 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Above Full Performance Level)

Experience: At least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-08) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed the following assignment: 1.Advanced DRT: Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

*a. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procdures;

b. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;

*c. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;

d. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;

e. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and

f. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
