Summary

This position is in the Medicine Service, Optometry section of the Tomah VAMC, Tomah WI. The primary purpose of this positon is to perform a variety of diagnostic tests in preparation for Optometrist review.

Duties:

-Performs diagnostic exams to assist Optometrist during patient consultations.

-Assists Optometrist with routine exams by holding instruments, positioning the patient, and instilling dilation, anesthetic, and/or refreshing eye drops.

-Interviews and screens patients prior to being seen by Optometrist, documenting the information on the intake form.

-Maintains optometry equipment to assure it is functional.

-Performs administrative duties necessary to the function of the optometry clinic.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-6: Must possess at least (1) one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) that required the application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: providing direct patient care; providing assistance while observing for signs of potential complications to patients; Examples of specialized experience include (but are not limited to): providing direct patient care; providing assistance while observing for signs of potential complications to patients; recognizing changes in patient conditions; skill in know anatomy, physiology and optical characteristics; working with instruments and materials sufficient to perform a variety of diagnostic assistive procedures; performing intraocular pressure checks and visual field determinations; and keeping optometry equipment functional.

OR

Education GS-6: Must have successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent), or an internship in course matter with a major that included courses directly related to the work of the Health Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcript (unofficial or official) or a course listing that identifies for each course completed: the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade, and grade-point average received. Education cannot be credited without documentation. (Transcripts required)

OR

Combining Experience and Education GS-6: Must have an equivalent combination of related graduate level education and specialized experience to meet the total experience requirements. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcript (unofficial or official) or a course listing that identifies for each course completed: the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade, and grade-point average received. Education cannot be credited without documentation. (Transcripts required)

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-6 level.

OR

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-6 level.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
