These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Devils Postpile National Monument is June through October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May, 2018.

This job announcement is open to receive applications from the first 50 applicants. The job announcement will remain open until either the quota of 50 applicants, or 02/21/2018 is reached. Responsibilities

Provides custodial services to buildings and restrooms on a daily basis. Works with higher-graded employees on general facility projects which may include assisting with plumbing, carpentry, and concrete work. Operates and performs routine maintenance on heavy power equipment such as chainsaws, portable snow blowers, and all types of hand and power tools (such as shovels, rakes, circular saws, etc.), to maintain buildings, campgrounds, picnic areas, and trails. Works on park trails with guidance of higher-graded work leads. Cuts heavy trees with axe or chainsaw; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, mixes and pours concrete, or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort. Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Moves furniture, removes and sets signs, paints picnic tables and signs, picks up litter, and cleans and maintains campgrounds.

Area information: Devils Postpile National Monument is 800 acres of granite domes, rivers, streams, and waterfalls. This stunning geologic formation for which the monument was named is nestled in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, just minutes from Mammoth Lakes, CA. Recreational opportunities in the area are endless, ranging from hiking, mountain biking, and climbing to mountaineering and skiing. Devils Postpile National Monument is in close proximity to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, and Death Valley National Parks and to Manzanar National Historic Site, providing a wide variety of opportunities to explore. The cost of living in the Mammoth Lakes area is considered high. Available government shared-rental housing units may be available, and additional housing options are available in the town of Mammoth Lakes, CA and rent in the area is also considered to be relatively high. Groceries, schools, and a hospital are all available in Mammoth Lakes.

Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

Have the ability to do the work of a Laborers without more than normal supervision. (Screen out) Work experience includes the following tasks: cleaning offices, restrooms and outdoor areas; operating and maintaining hand and power tools; clearing trees or brush; loading and unloading supplies and materials; picking up litter; cleaning and repairing signs; emptying trash receptacles; mowing and trimming lawns; and keeping trails and/or public recreational areas clean and neat.

Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort.The work involves lifting and moving objects of 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80-100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust and dirt. Work requires employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
